  PROGRAM OVERVIEW

The Center of Excellence (COE) program, funded through the Department of Health and Human Services, was established to assist designated health profession schools and other public and non-profit, or educational institutions strengthen the national capacity to produce a culturally competent healthcare workforce, whose diversity is representative of the U.S. population.

The Center of Excellence High School Summer Enrichment Science (HSSES) Academy is one of the many support programs offered through the COE to facilitate entry to the Doctor of Pharmacy Program at Howard University. The HSSES Academy a six- week residential summer enrichment science academy for rising 11th and 12th grade high school students, as well as students who will complete the 12th grade in 2014. Twenty (20) High School students who demonstrate an interest in the sciences, a career in pharmacy or other health professions will be selected. The COE HSSES Academy selection process is competitive. In addition to demonstrated leadership skills, students must also have a high aptitude for science/mathematics and technology. Preference will be given to students who reside in the Washington, DC Metropolitan area. The COE HSSES Academy is a five day academic schedule that exposes students to the pre-requisite classes that are required for a major in pharmacy or other health professions. The curriculum focuses on science related material and includes classes in Biology, Chemistry, Medical Terminology, Mathematics, Computer Science, and Career Exposure in clinical settings. Students will be in classes Monday-Thursday from 8:30 am to 4:30pm and on Fridays in their Clinical Sites between 10:00 am to 4:00 pm. Weekends include scheduled tutorials and mandatory science focused excursions. Materials and items covered by the program: Housing, meals, course materials (books, pens, pencils, paper, etc.), activities, clinical shadowing, and transportation to clinical sites and mandatory science focused excursions.

Not included: Meals eaten off campus (other than those provided by the program), medical expenses, personal hygiene items, and personal spending money, etc.)

OBJECTIVES:

  1. To encourage young under-represented minority students to pursue careers in Pharmacy or other health professions.
  2. To provide an opportunity for young under-represented minority students to develop mentoring relationships with current minority health professionals and graduate health professional students.

The application and supporting materials must be postmarked or electronically submitted no later than March 21, 2014 (a current unofficial transcript needs to be submitted with the application). Competitive applicants with complete application materials will be contacted for a face-to-face interview scheduled to be conducted April 7-25, 2014. All applicants will be notified of their decision status by April 30, 2014.. Applicants must reply within five (5) business days of notification. Final official high school transcripts should be received by June 21, 2014 for accepted students.

ELIGIBILITY & SELECTION CRITERIA:

Participants will be selected based on their eligibility and merit of their application (GPA, letters of recommendation, and their demonstrated interest in the health professions). Participant requirements include:

  • High School Students who will enter the 11th or 12th grade in the Fall of 2014, and students who will complete the 12th grade in June 2014
  • Student must be in a college preparatory curriculum in their respective High School.
  • Students must have taken and passed two courses in high school English with a C or better.
  • Students must have taken and passed biology or chemistry and a mathematics course with a C or better.
  • Students must have a cumulative 3.00 Grade Point Average.
  • Students who are underrepresented minorities and/or financially disadvantaged will be given priority.
  • Preference will be given to students who reside in Washington, DC, Maryland or Virginia.
  • A favorable interview with COE personnel is required for all competitive applicants with a complete application.

APPLICATION MATERIALS:

  • A complete COE HSSES Academy Application.
  • Supporting Materials:

    • A typed 250 word essay demonstrating an interest in pharmacy or other health professions and describing how attending this summer enrichment science academy will be beneficial to you in your future career path in the health professions.
    • Three favorable recommendations [on School Letterhead] (1 from a science teacher, 1 from a math teacher, and 1 from the school principal).
    • Students must submit a current unofficial transcript to the Center of Excellence prior to the March 21, 2014 application deadline.

MINIMUM STANDARDS OF PARTICIPATION:

  • Documented acceptance to the COE High School Summer Enrichment Science Academy.
  • Final official transcripts must be submitted no later than June 21, 2014.
  • Required proof of Health Insurance.
  • Required proof of being in compliance with the physical, immunizations, criminal background check and other requirements of the assigned Clinical Sites.
  • Completed and submitted application to the Summer Youth Employment Program (SYEP) [for Washington, DC participants ONLY (DUE: Saturday, February 15, 2014)
