Established in 2008, The Bariatric Surgery program  as a part of the General Surgery Division is committed to providing our patients with the most current and accurate information possible to ensure that their decision to undergo a weight loss procedure or medical weight loss is an informed one.  We offer both medical and surgical weight loss solutions. We offer evaluations and consultation with an experienced bariatric surgeon and multi-disciplinary support team, who will be involved in your care both before surgery and in the years afterwards. In addition, we have a plastic surgeon specializing in body contouring once the weight is gone.

Established in 1941, the Cardiothoracic and Vascular Division continues to bring excellent healthcare services in the areas of Endovascular, Vascular and Cardiothoracic Services.

Neurosurgery

The Division of Neurosurgery offers patient-oriented, high technology care for all neurological conditions that include brain tumor surgery, spine surgery, and treatment of other spinal-related neurological and cerebrovascular problems. Emphasis is placed on the management of acute head and spinal cord injuries, critical care, disk disease, subarachnoid hemorrhage, peripheral nerve injuries, and the management of increased intracranial pressure.

General Surgery

Following the death of Dr. Charles Drew, April 1, 1950, the Division of General Surgery was established with Dr. Burke Syphax as Chief. Prior to that year, Dr. Howe and Dr. Drew, who both were general surgeons, along with their attending and resident staff provided the instruction in general surgery. The emphasis on residents as teachers continues today.

Otaryngology

Otolaryngology, Head and Neck Surgery and Audiology, a division of the Department of Surgery, provides comprehensive diagnosis and therapy for maladies of the upper aerodigestive tract in pediatric and adult patients. It encompasses disorders of the inner ear, skull base, and endocrine system. At its disposal are modern diagnostic/therapeutic audiology, surgical microscopy/endoscopy, sinus/middle ear instrumentation, and sophisticated radiological modalities, including C.T. scans, MRI and ultrasonography.

Podiatry

Howard University's podiatry program was established at Freedman's Hospital in the late 1950's with Dr. Murial Osbourne as the first section chief.  Dr. William Rutherford was the second Section chief which then moved to the Department of Surgery from the Department of Orthopedics.  Dr. Rutherford collaborated with Dr. Kirk Geter the current Chief in establishing the direction of the Department.  Today, the division offers a wide variety of comprehensive and surgical ser ices to the delight of the community and the Department.  The Residency program was established in 2000 and has trained numerous students and residents in the art of medical and surgical care of the foot.

Trauma and Critical Care

Howard University Hospital became a Level I Trauma Center in 1986, the highest level awarded by the American College of Surgeons. As a trauma center, board-certified surgeons, emergency physicians, anesthesiologists, radiologists, and trauma nurses are available 24 hours a day, every day to meet the needs of critically ill patients. The center manages the care of more than 1200 patients per year.

Transplant Center

Founded in July 1973, the Transplant Center performed its first kidney transplant in January of 1974. The state-of-the-art Transplant Center provides comprehensive treatment for diseases of the kidney. The center offers consultations for renal transplantation, vascular access for dialysis patients and general surgery. Additionally, the center provides support for patients and family members at weekly support group meetings. More than 400 patients have received kidney transplants at center.

Our mission is to perform organ transplants for those people who need them, regardless of race, sex, or religion. We pride ourselves in our honesty, sensitivity and commitment to quality care.

Urology

The Division of Urology interacts actively with most other adult and pediatric services at Howard University Hospital. Affiliation with District of Columbia General Hospital, Children's National Medical Center, Walter Reed Army Medical Center, and the Georgetown University Stone Center has served to fortify and enrich the Howard experience.

The Division of Urology has developed a special expertise in the treatment of Prostate Cancer that has been recognized at a national level in the awarding of an NIH research grant. This grant will further the study the study of this disease, which inordinately affects the African-American population of the United States.

A full range of surgical and diagnostic urologic services are available. Physicians accept referrals for consultation/second opinion and ongoing management. Clinical subspecialties include:
